Civics Boot Camp

Love Ottawa? Become a City Maker today!

Synapcity promotes constructive problem solving between citizens and their city, and we see dialogue and understanding as the first essential step.

About Workshop

Our Civics Boot Camp is an interactive and experiential program that targets people who are passionate about Ottawa. It is designed for those who want to know more about how the city works—people who have ideas for positive change but need inspiration, community support and/or knowledge to make it happen.

Working with new contacts and neighbours, you’ll explore ways to identify and work with local champions about issues you care about. You’ll also gain fresh perspectives on interacting with elected officials, city staff, businesses and other civic groups.

Civics Boot Camp is a series of six three-hour evening sessions delivered over six weeks using a combination of in-person workshops and online learning.

Co-created by citizens, specialists and community developers, at Synapcity Civics Boot Camp you will

  • LEARN how to navigate the local context, understanding the players, relationships and powers at various sectors
  • UNDERSTAND City spending, decision-making and the built environment
  • EXPLAIN how communities and cities are built the way they are
  • IDENTIFY and work with local champions through dialogue and collaboration about issues you care about
  • USE constructive problem-solving between the city and its citizens

With opportunities to work both in big and small teams, you will use living Ottawa case studies to play with tools, strategies and resources to advance a city issue.
