Holiday Message

A note from our Executive Director, Manjit Basi.

The past year has been full of surprises – or perhaps not – depending on our individual perspective.

The past year has been full of surprises – or perhaps not – depending on our individual perspective. Brexit happened, Trump is president elect, we’ve seen the largest global migration of people since WWII, an iconic Canadian band’s farewell tour spoke up for aboriginal rights, refugee teams participated in the Olympics for the first time in history, and in our own community, we have witnessed violence and racism erupt.

While many of the events of the past year seem unbelievable and daunting – could they be the fissures that needed to crack in order to let surface what we’ve worked hard to ignore, bury or make invisible? Could this be a reminder of all that is at stake, that our work is not done, and that more of us are required to stand up, speak out, and take action for the kind of world we want to live in.

At Synapcity, we believe in beginning locally. Ottawa is our collective home. We are inspired by the growing movement – the number of alumni, contributors, funders, and partners who want to engage differently to make everyone in our city happier, healthier, smarter, and safer.

It’s time to question who we are and how we operate. It’s time to step back, observe, and listen deeply to each other.  The complexity of issues in the world and here in our city is growing – it’s time to disrupt the status quo.

At our root, we are all yearning for similar things. Respect. Dignity. Belonging. Love. And at the very basic level, nourishment for our bodies and our soul, and a home to feel safe and warm.

Let’s wake up to that in 2017. Here’s to awakening with gratitude, compassion, love and peace.

On behalf of everyone here at Synapcity, we wish you all a happy holiday season.
