Community improvement

Placemaking 101

We gather community members to better understand how various sectors come together to improve community life.

We ask local Ottawans to tell us why they care about making Ottawa’s places great!

About Workshop

We explore the challenges and opportunities for placemaking. We gather a range of people to discover why they care about great places in Ottawa. How do our public spaces influence our communities and our culture?

For every great public space, there is a hardworking group of people behind it. These workshops give us an understanding of why individuals choose to put the effort in, what success looks like, and how we might be able to adapt some of their experiences into our own.

Workshop Details

In these four-part Synapcity sessions, citizen-led teams come together with civic leaders to imagine and design the places and spaces that are important to them in their neighbourhoods.

Activities include:

  • Engage in the planning process using locally designed tools
  • Work with interactive neighbourhood models to identify placemaking spaces in Ottawa.
  • Share ideas for what is important in Ottawa’s future.

In the short term, participants learn how to identify and imagine potential underused space for community use. In the long term, participants feel a deeper sense of belonging to their neighbourhoods.

Next sessions: May and June 2017
